Overview
We are a fast-growing, scalable brand house in the cannabis and hemp CPG sector, operating a portfolio of premium brands. This Trade Marketing Director is a senior execution leader responsible for driving in-market success across both cannabis (licensed-state) and hemp (national) divisions, with primary emphasis on the cannabis side. You will own B2B trade marketing strategy and field execution for licensed cannabis markets while supporting national hemp distribution through wholesale and distributor partnerships. This role bridges strategy and in-market activation: you will develop and deploy retailer programs, merchandising standards, promotional campaigns, and trade activations that accelerate velocity, build brand presence, and deliver measurable revenue impact in a highly regulated environment. You will lead a national field marketing team and work closely with the CMO, Sales, Creative, and Operations to align all trade initiatives with brand strategy, inventory realities, and compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Cannabis Division (Primary Focus – Licensed-State B2B Execution)
Lead all trade marketing efforts in licensed cannabis states, working with licensing partners and self-distribution channels to drive retailer velocity and shelf presence.
Develop and execute state-specific trade marketing plans that fully comply with local regulations on packaging, labeling, promotions, and merchandising.
Build strong relationships with licensing partners and key retailers, providing turnkey trade programs, POS materials, retailer training, and in-store activation support.
Design and implement high-impact retailer programs, including bundling, loyalty incentives, trade shows, and experiential activations.
Oversee field execution of cannabis-focused promotions and activations.
Hemp Division (National Scale Support)
Support national hemp distribution through major wholesale and distributor partnerships with coordinated trade marketing assets, merchandising standards, and promotional campaigns.
Ensure seamless integration between hemp and cannabis trade efforts to maximize cross-channel opportunities.
Develop compliant national trade programs for various retail channels (smoke shops, dispensaries, convenience, etc.).
Cross-Division Leadership & Execution
Build, lead, and optimize the national field marketing team (Field Marketing Managers and Merchandising Experts) to deliver consistent on-shelf excellence and brand standards.
Collaborate with the Creative team to produce all necessary trade assets: POS displays, signage, promotional collateral, and sales materials.
Partner with Sales to align trade programs with key account plans and distributor objectives while providing field intelligence to refine sales strategy.
Work closely with Operations and Supply Chain to ensure trade promotions are aligned with inventory availability and fulfillment timelines.
Track and report on trade performance metrics (velocity, sell-through, ROI) and deliver insights and executive dashboards to the CMO and leadership team.
Strategy, Compliance & Innovation
Contribute to go-to-market planning and execution for new product launches.
Stay current on regulatory changes and adapt trade strategies proactively.
Identify new trade opportunities, retailer segments, and partnership activations to expand distribution and market share.
Qualifications
7+ years of progressive trade marketing or field sales leadership in CPG, with at least 4 years in cannabis or regulated hemp strongly preferred.
Deep experience in licensed cannabis markets (multi-state preferred) and proven success driving B2B retailer velocity, merchandising, and promotional programs.
Familiarity with national hemp or open-market distribution channels is a plus.
Demonstrated ability to manage a national field team and execute compliant, high-impact trade programs in regulated environments.
Strong project management and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Proficiency with CRM tools and trade performance analytics.
Bachelor’s degree required.
Willingness to travel extensively (50%+).
